Train or plane?
The report particularly focuses on the im-
pacts of rail and air transport, which con-
tribute significantly to passenger transport
in Europe. The assessment shows that, ot-
her than walking or cycling, rail transport
is the best and most environmentally fri-
endly transport modality. The impact of
emissions from air transport is much hig-
her in terms of passenger-kilometres. The
report notes, however, that air travel does
not necessarily have to be the most harm-
ful mode of transport. Travelling by a pet-
rol- or diesel-powered car can be much
more harmful, especially if you are travel-
ling alone.
However, the report does note that for
longer distances, the environmental cost
of air travel increases to a lesser degree
because the environmental cost of lan-
ding and take-off does not vary with di-
stance on direct flights.

on a comparison of travel
between 20 pairs of cities
across Europe
A separate communication from the EEA
concerning another study, also published
today and commissioned by the Agency,
states that rail and water transport display
the lowest carbon intensity as far as moto-
rised transport is concerned. These modes
of transport have the lowest emissions per
kilometre and unit transported, with emis-
sions from air and road transport being
much higher in comparison.
While the efficiency of rail and air tran-
sport has increased over the period of five
years monitored by the study, it appears
to be stagnant for the other modes.
According to the communication, a tran-
sition to transport by rail and water should
be encouraged while improving the effici-
ency of all motorised forms of transport in
terms of greenhouse gas emissions.
