rail transport
with connection to the user's or owner's
ERP system. UHF RFID technology and
the robust Vilant Railroad units have proven useful in this area.
For example, Finnish Railways has been
RFID tagging all its wagons since 2010 so
that they can then be registered in the Vilant system for cargo tracking and transport security. Finland today has a country-wide railway network (5,919 km)
covered not only with HABD and WILD
detectors, but also with RFID reading stations that help identify individual wagons.
Even in the harsh Nordic conditions, the
whole system of this railcar tracking is very durable. Since it requires no direct visibility for operation, there is no problem
with high speed. UHF RFID tags are costeffective and require no maintenance
(such as battery replacement). Full use of
the recorded data enables preventive maintenance to improve rail safety, as well as
cargo tracking and forwarding to target
customers. The RFID system tracks the mileage of each vehicle and helps identify
when service is needed. Moreover, the
washing lines use RFID to identify the wagons and automatically select the correct
washing programme.

RFID Vilant
for the underground railway
After successful use on the railways, Helsinki City Metro (HKL) decided to implement a similar RFID system for arrival detection. The company Turck Vilant
Systems helped HKL install RFID tags on
the sleepers of the metro line. Each underground train carriage is then fitted with
a specially made RFID reader that scans
RFID tags along the route and the system
sends the data to a special server to track
the positions of the carriages. The system
also reports the train arrangement and direction of the train, daily and total mileage. This data is then used by various other
companies, for example in their travel
planning apps.

Worldwide operation
Turck Vilant Systems is one of Europe's leading suppliers of turnkey RFID solutions
for logistics, asset tracking and inventory
management. The same solutions also
monitor and manage maintenance on
the railway, such as car wash cycle management, operational safety and operational monitoring (HABD/WILD detection),
or cargo tracking.
Turck Vilant systems are already used by
more than 1,000 companies in 30 countries, including large multinationals, and
offer up to 15 years of experience.
