DAKO-CZ to supply braking

system for modernised trams

in Gothenburg

Hydraulic brake units including steering for a total of 80 modernised trams will be

delivered to Gothenburg, Sweden, in the coming years by DAKO-CZ, a member

of the Czechoslovak Group. The manufacturer of braking systems and components

for rolling stock from Třemošnice in east Bohemia will produce them in the coming years

for the trains to be modernised by the Škoda Group at its Škoda Ekova plant in Ostrava.

The price of the contract for the delivery of a completely new hydraulic braking system

amounts to nearly CZK 110 million.

The original braking system of the M31

tram was a combination of a pneumatic

braking system on a motor chassis and a

hydraulic braking system on a conventional chassis. The main purpose of the modernisation was to supply a complete hydraulic braking system for all chassis. The

modernised M31 trams consist of three

bogies, two motorised and one conventional. The motor chassis will be equipped

with dual circuit passive brake units and

the conventional chassis with an active

brake system. The M21 trams were produced in 1984-1992 as two-cell trams,

and the first upgrade to three-cell trams

with the designation M31 took place in

1998-2002.

"We are pleased to be involved in this

contract and to contribute to the safety

of the upgraded trams in Gothenburg.

The contract follows successful cooperation with Škoda Ekova in the reconstruction

of the braking system on trams for Tallinn,

Estonia. In Gothenburg, this modified brake system will be used on a conventional

chassis, and we will develop a new brake

system for motor chassis due to the high

relative movements of the brake disc in

relation to the brake unit," says Zdeněk

Macháček, Business Development Manager at DAKO-CZ, adding: "This contract

is very important for us; it is the second

largest project in the supply of hydraulic

braking systems and the deliveries will last

until 2027."

During a complete modernisation after

more than 20 years of operation, the M31

trams in Gothenburg will be upgraded not

only with a new braking system but also,

for example, a new door system, including

a ramp at one of the links. An air-conditioning unit will also be installed in the driver's cab, the electrical system will be completely renovated, the floors will be

replaced and the interiors of the trains

modified. In particular, DAKO-CZ will

supply: the iRB 03.3 control system, the

newly developed M31 brake units, brake

discs and combined emergency brake

units, emergency brake units with safety

circuit, JA 52 active brake units, active

brake units and brake discs.

This year, the Třemošnice-based manufacturer is also cooperating with Škoda

Group on the supply of hydraulic brake

units including steering for the new 29T3

and 30T3 trams, which will be deployed in

Bratislava. In the field of tram transport, it

has also been supplying its braking systems to the Polish manufacturer Modetrans Poznan for years. It is completing an

order for this company this year for the

supply of electro-hydraulic braking systems for 49 low-floor 4-unit type LF 07 AC

trams to be deployed in Wroclaw, Poland,

and has won another interesting order for

the supply of single-unit double-car trams

with electromechanical brakes to the Berlin district of Woltersdorf.

Further cooperation with Pragoimex is

on a tram project for Brno, where this year a hydraulic brake system with the EVO

2 designation will be delivered for Drak

trams and an electromechanical brake for

negative temperatures down to –40 °C

with control will be used for the Latvian city of Daugapils.
